Murkallin Fm

Period:
Jurassic

Age Interval:
Bajocian (J2-3 Mr), BMP1; P1

Province:
East Tajik (Central Pamir)

Type Locality and Naming

Includes in Bozbaital horst - Murghab basin, Karasu silver-Pangazdjilga thrust sheet

Jurassic sections of the Central Muskul type (центральномузкольскоrо типов)

Synonym: Murkallinskaya suite, муркаллинскую свиту

Reference section:

Lithology and Thickness

The suite is composed of varicolored sandstones, siltstones, and clay slates with rare interbeds and lenses of small-gravel conglomerates. The thickness of the suite is 100 - 150 m. But lithology column in Rutte et al., 2017 indicates 400-600 m thickness.

Lithology Pattern:
Sandy_claystone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It lies conformably on the Dzhankaindy Fm of Carnian-Rhaetian age

Upper contact

It is overlain conformably by the Chatagay suite (чатаrайской свитой) of Middle and Upper Jurassic.

Regional extent

Jurassic sections of the Central Muskul type (центральномузкольскоrо типов) are developed in the inter-watershed part of the Muskul Ridge, on the watershed of the Bozbaital (Murlalla) and Southern Sauxai rivers. The Lower Jurassic Bajocian part of the section is distinguished here as the Murlallin Fm (муркаллинскую свиту).

Age

Its attribution to the Lower Jurassic - Bajocian is conditional, based on its stratigraphic position. Hence it is placed in Hettangian-Bajocian for schematic stratigraphic representation purpose in Lexicon as the lithology column in Rutte et al., 2017 indicates 400-600 m thickness.
